IN VIEW OF THEIR APPALLING HUMAN RIGHTS RECORD, LACK OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH, DISTRESSING ANIMAL RIGHTS RECORD ETC. ETC., MANY HAVE WONDERED HOW ON EARTH WERE THE OLYMPIC GAMES AWARDED TO BEIJING.
NOT TO MENTION THE DREADFUL AIR POLLUTION WITH WHICH THE ATHLETES WILL HAVE TO CONTEND.

In light of Chinese superstition and their belief in
the luck of number 8, all augurs well for the
XXIX Olympiad scheduled to open Beijing on:

8th day of the 8th month in the year 2008
at 8 minutes past 8 o`clock in the evening.

The Summer Olympic Games of 2008 will run from 8th to 24th August and will be closely followed by the Paralympics.

The Olympic Organisation Committee for Beijing games is known as BOCOG.

Reports indicate that preparations are well on schedule, including the, main Olympic Stadium, nicknamed the Bird's Nest because of its unusual design.

It is anticipated that the games will be attended by some 10,500 athletes plus the organisers and the games will be covered by around 30,000 media personnel. Athletes will be competing for medals in all 28 Summer Olympic sports.

Beijing succeeded in its bid for the games over Istanbul in Turkey, Paris in France, Toronto in Canada and Osaka in Japan and was considered something of a controversial choice in light of its human rights history and the air pollution.

With an already booming Chinese economy, the 2008 Olympic Games will indoubtedly add greatly to the tourist industry and it is hoped that some 3 million will visit China as a result of the Olympics.
