2012 Summer Olympic Games
to take place 27 July to 12 August
followed by
Paralympics from 29 August to 9 September

LONDON, ENGLAND

UNLUCKY MOSCOW

Moscow was chosen as the candidate city and subsequently passed the first hurdle, making it to the short list along with Paris, London, Madrid and New York.

The last time the games were held in Moscow in 1980, they were something of a disaster as they were boycotted by a number of countries in protest at Soviet policy in Afghanistan.

Moscow was not a forerunner and was not expected to win, however, like all the other candidate cities it pulled out all the stops to try and prove that they should be awarded the coveted 2012 olympics.

Moscows bid included utilising existing sport facilities with the minimum of construction of new installations.

The games would have centred around Moscow itself which means that more hotel accommodation would have been required to cope with the huge influx of visitors anticipated. There had been talk of building prefabricated hotels to overcome the bed shortage.

Moscow was the first city to be eliminated in the final selection process in Singapore for the 2012 Summer Olympics, which was awarded to London
