2012 Summer Olympic Games to take place 27 July to 12 August followed by Paralympics from 29 August to 9 September LONDON, ENGLAND NYC DID NOT GET THE BITE OF THE APPLE THIS TIME AROUND Because of its vast size and population the United States have always been a force to be reckoned with, having won a great many medals over the past years. The Mayor of New York City had led the bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics stressing that New York, with its diverse cultures, would be the ideal setting for such a truly international event. The fact that it was not long since the USA has been Host City to both winter and summer Olympics might have gone against them, plus the fact that the 2010 Winter Olympic Games are also to be held in North America, in Vancouver in Canada. New York itself seemed to have had some difficulty in deciding exactly where to build the main Olympic Stadium, with different districts and bodies competing between themselves. Most facilities would have to be constructed from scratch but it was planned that they should all be in the centre of New York, with the Olympic Village for athletes on the banks of the river. Existing facilities would have been used for a number of sporting events. There is no shortage of all categories of hotel accommodation in New York. New York faced stiff competition from favourite Candidate Cities Paris and London as well as Madrid and Moscow. The security aspect is something which which would have been closely looked at by the IOC. The decision on London as the chosen city for the 2012 Olympic Games was announced 6th July 2005, following a month in which all the cities involved had a final opportunity to lobby their cause in SINGAPORE ©olympicgames-news.com Terms & Conditions Disclaimer |
